Commentary: There are many situations in life when one may need to make an act of perfect contrition. Most of these times occur when a Catholic priest isn’t readily available. But, not necessarily when a priest is not available as it could be a situation when the soul is not quite comfortable with the particular priest who is available. The soul decides this. For the soul puts oneself in the hands of another and must do that carefully. But, I’m thinking more of the times when circumstances change where really a priest in not available. For instance, before when a Marine goes to battle and the Chaplain is covering so many other men and women that it is just impossible for the Chaplain to cover so many confessions. Another time is when one is late due to air flight delays and the circumstances are such that the airport and city does not lend itself to supporting with a priest. Sometimes catastrophes occur and the normal daily events of life are so transformed that the reality is that there is no other recourse then to make an act of perfect contrition. Times like these can be extremely stressful. Yet, there is sweetness in experiencing the trust and mercy of God when one makes a perfect act of contrition for the love of God and knows forgiveness for one’s sins. Every night before bedtime, one should make an act of perfect contrition for simply the love of God.
