A MESSAGE FROM SLADE O’BRIEN,

AFP-FL’s NEW STATE DIRECTOR First, let me say that I am thrilled to be a part of the AFP and AFP-Florida team, and thank you for the warm welcome I have received so far since coming on board as the new Florida State Director. In the last year, we have achieved great things in Florida to promote less government regulation and lower taxes. There is a lot of work still to be done in 2011 and coming into 2012, though, and we will need as many patriots involved in the fight as we can get.

I am calling on each of you to get engaged in what is happening in Florida and Washington, and to reach out to your friends and family and get them engaged as well. Also, if you haven’t already, please email me and let me know about the issues that are important to you. With your involvement we can and will be successful in restoring the principles of freedom and prosperity to America.

For more about me and my background, read my bio here.

In liberty,

Slade O’Brien
State Director
Americans for Prosperity – Florida

-REMINDER-

TODAY IS NATIONAL DISTRICT OFFICE DAY -VISIT YOUR CONGRESSMAN’S OFFICE IN SUPPORT OF CUT, CAP & BALANCE

To balance the budget or not to balance the budget – this is the question that remains unanswered in Washington. Discussions between parties continue and now a vote on the Balanced Budget Amendment is expected for the week of July 18th. The amendment includes spending caps at 18 percent of GDP and a requirement for a supermajority vote to raise taxes.

Today, conservative groups around the country are working together to hold

National District Day at 12:00 noon.

Please take a moment out of your busy day to stop by your Congressional office and urge your representative to support the Balanced Budget Amendment.

If you are unable to make it into your local district office today you can also take action online by signing the Pledge and sending a letter to your representative to sign as well. Click here to take action online.

2011 DEFENDING THE AMERICAN DREAM SUMMIT

AFP Foundation’s 5th annual Defending the American Dream Summit will be held November 4-5, 2011 at the DC Convention Center in Washington, DC.

Join America’s foremost free-market voices, top experts on grassroots mobilization, and the nation’s largest gathering of grassroots leaders from across the country in a massive show of force for our shared belief in limited government and free enterprise.

AFPF-FL is working on putting together travel packages for Florida activists wanting to attend the Summit. We will be sending out more details soon, but if you have a group that is interested please contact us here.

Find out more details about the event and register here.

THE IMPORTANCE OF REDISTRICTING

The redistricting process happens once every ten years and it is an extremely important process that decides how the State will be divided into elected districts. Florida stands to gain two new Congressional districts, and to rearrange state legislative districts based on population growth. This process decides which district your address will be located in and what constituency you will be a member of.

The legislature’s Redistricting Committee is holding public meetings all around the state to receive public input on the process. Find a meeting in your area here.

You can also access detailed information about the process and draw your own proposed maps at the redistricting website here.

TELL CONGRESS TO OPPOSE NATURAL GAS SUBSIDIES

Republicans rightly rejected President Obama’s pet project to subsidize electric vehicles, but now they are dangerously close to doing the same thing with natural gas vehicles. Natural gas is a great energy source and it may well be the next fuel for American vehicles, but that’s a decision for consumers to make, not Congress. H.R. 1380 is anti-market and creates an uneven playing field. Send a message that you reject this subsidy and expect Congress to reject it too. Join the more than 10,500 people have signed our petition. Sign the petition opposing natural gas subsidies here.

  1. Hi Slade,

I love Americans for Prosperity. I’m working on an exploratory committee to run for Congress. The most important issues to me as a citizen in Florida are Impact Fees and Sales Taxes. I want to write a paper on the hypothesis that impact fees and sales taxes discourage living in and doing business in Florida. I understand that there is a state law on impact fees. Collier County does not understand impact fees, and I suspect that large business in collusion with government discourage small business and living in Collier County. Everyone knows that there is a high per-capita income in Collier. This is because people come from out of state and live on the coastline. But the people who try to live and make a living in other parts of Collier have a very difficult regulatory and tax environment with which to undergo. It is a Republican-made situation which needs to change, and it always looks like it will never change. It’s time for a more conservative and less Republican politician.
