Democrats want to move back Florida presidential primary » Naples Daily News

TALLAHASSEE — Democrats want to move Florida’s presidential primary back to a later date to comply with the rules of both major parties.

Their legislation drew opposition Thursday from Florida Senate President Mike Haridopolos, a Merritt Island Republican, but they may have a friend in Gov. Rick Scott.

Florida jumped its primary from March to January in 2008 to give the state more influence. Both national parties then threatened to strip Florida of delegates.

Haridopolos said that’s a risk worth taking. Scott, also a Republican, said he wants the primary as early as it can be held without losing delegates.

Haridopolos said Florida is the most important state in deciding presidential elections so its primary should be among the first.
